You are invited to participate in a project supervised by Evan Ifekoya (Evan.Ifekoya[at]falmouth.ac.uk) and conducted by Charlie KWONG (tk290331[at]falmouth.ac.uk), who are staff and graduate student of Falmouth School of Art in Falmouth University, United Kingdom.

Introduction of the Research

The Message Index is a qualitative research project that focuses on exploring the lived experiences of long-distance communication among immigrants / international residents from Hong Kong, their families, and friends back in their home country. Participants are invited to share voice messages, consisting of one question and one response, to be collected, edited, and randomly paired on the project’s website for a simulated non-interactive conversation experience, complete with subtitles. The aim of the project is to showcase the unique perspectives and experiences of immigrants and their loved ones through their long-distance conversations.

Objectives

  • Create an interactive web-based artwork that enables viewers to immersive experience both sides of a long-distance conversation.
  • Reveal the long-distance relationships of immigrants and their families or relatives living in both the country of origin and the country of immigration.
  • Transform creative and research findings into an educational e-learning package that aids in the migration transition and promotes an engaging relationship with loved ones.

Methodology

This sampling phrase consists of two parts. Interested participants will be invited to complete a questionnaire and to share an audio message. The questionnaire contains brief questions regarding lived experiences as an international resident, long-distance communication, and marginalization (if any). Additionally, participants may be asked if they are willing to participate in an online interview, which would take approximately 30-45 minutes and could be scheduled in a format that accommodates their time zone and schedule.

Potential Risks

There are no potential risks from the research. Your participation in the project is voluntary. You have every right to withdraw from the study at any time without negative consequences. All information related to you will remain confidential and will be identifiable by codes known only to the researcher. Interviewee(s) can choose to hide their identity in the video clip ,audio clips, and the data listed in the research paper, such as using blurry effect, sound transformation, using number to replace their name etc.

To prevent data loss or corruption, we will back up data to multiple restricted locations and store the data on secure and reliable storage devices. All data will be access restricted, only PI and the supervisor can access the data.

Your shared data will contribute to the community-based digital artwork, providing qualitative reference to the educational SCORM Package (Sharable Content Object Reference Model / Co-developed by The Education University of Hong Kong), and oral presentation in conference.
